ANSWER: The USITC DataWeb is a powerful on line source of official U.S. export and import statistics. The Commodity-by-Country series shows all the destination (exports) or source (imports) countries for a given U.S. product, by value, quantity and year. The Country-by-Commodity series shows all specific U.S. products imported from or exported to a given country. With these statistics, you can readily spot the largest and fastest growing export or source markets for products like yours; or identify the largest and fastest growing U.S. products exported to or imported from a particular country. You can download individual tables to a spreadsheet for further massaging as you wish (e.g., growth rates, rank ordering, projections, etc.).
Foreign import/export statistics at the 3-digit SITC level are available on line from the International Trade Centre (see Aggregated Trade Statistics). Additional sources are specific market research reports, such as Industry Subsector Analyses (ISAs) that extract and analyze the data. Foreign trade statistics help you “size up” markets of interest, identify the major supplier countries, and compare U.S. and competitor market shares.
