The Border Export Program brings representatives from major international manufacturers in the Southern California/Baja California region to a series of events organized in conjunction with the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce called MEXPORT Supplier’s Forums. The goal is to match small and medium-sized businesses with the manufacturers that are looking to source services, components, raw materials, and other commodities regionally. The San Diego Center for International Trade Development (CITD) is hosted by Southwestern College and provides export/import assistance to San Diego and Imperial County small and medium-sized businesses. If you’re a seasoned import/export pro with a specific issue, or completely new to the expanding world of exporting, we have International Trade Specialists who can assist you through one-on-one business counseling and training programs. Appointments with international trade specialists and business advisors are available at several locations for your convenience.

San Diego CITD Director, Victor Castillo, and CITD International Trade Specialist, Gustavo Guerrero joined a U.S. trade delegation on a tour of the Mexican border region in Tijuana on Monday. The trade delegation, made up of senior U.S. Government officials, including Assistant Secretary of Commerce, Michael C. Camuñez, and U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Anthony Wayne, engaged with key local public and private stakeholders to advance border trade facilitation discussions. The delegation was also joined by prominent U.S. companies, led by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The tour itinerary included a business roundtable breakfast with U.S. and Mexican businesses, a tour of the Mexican facilities of leading medical device manufacturer DJO Global, roundtable lunch with the Tijuana Economic Development Corporation, briefing at the Southwestern College Higher Education Center in Otay Mesa on the San Diego – Tijuana Airport Cross-border facility, visit to the site, and a San Diego Border Leaders Awards Ceremony and Reception.
As part of its California State Trade and Export Promotion (CalSTEP) project activities, the San Diego CITD arranged for businesses from the region to join the Tijuana tour and facilitated matchmaking with DJO Global. CalSTEP, funded in part through a grant award with the U.S. Small Business Administration, combines a network of state, federal, private and non-profit trade promotion organizations in California to facilitate export promotion activities, serving targeted industries, to drive exports for small businesses.
The Tijuana stop was part of the overall Border Trade Tour that is taking place from June 4th – 8th with visits by the delegation to key points along the U.S. – Mexico border including El Paso, TX/Ciudad Juarez,MX and Laredo, TX/Monterrey, MX. The objective of the tour is to highlight the and strengthen the $460 billion economic relationship between the U.S. and Mexico. Mexico is the U.S.’s second largest export market, accounting for approximately $200 billion of U.S. exports in 2011.

The San Diego Center for International Trade Development in collaboration with the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce conducted another successful Mexport Supplier’s Forum event. This forum was the 4th in the series and featured Nypro Healthcare, a glob
al leader in the manufacture of plastics products for the healthcare industry. The goal of these forums is to expand business opportunities for local suppliers by matching them with large international manufacturers that are seeking to source their products and services regionally. At the forums, representatives from the invited manufacturers explain their current needs and the process for doing business with them.

The San Diego CITD participated at this year’s MEXPORT 2012 tradeshow which took place on May 17th. MEXPORT, organized by the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce, is the Southern California/Baja California region’s premier industrial trade show promoting sourcing opportunities with major manufacturing facilities in Baja California. SBA District Director for San Diego, Dr. Ruben Garcia, provided opening remarks along with Congressman Bob Filner. MEXPORT 2012 drew over 200 exhibitors across various industries and more than 1900 attendees.
This year’s tradeshow included matchmaking sessions organized by the San Diego CITD in conjunction with the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce. The goal of the matchmaking sessions, part of the CITD’s California State Trade and Export Promotion(CalSTEP) activities, was to facilitate exports from the area by matching small and medium-sized businesses with the manufacturers that are looking to source services, components, raw materials, and other commodities regionally.
